The Featherweight

Set in the mid-1960s, The Featherweight unfolds a captivating chapter in the true-life story of Italian-American boxer Willie Pep—the winningest fighter of all time. Down and out in his mid-40s, with his personal life in shambles, Willie decides to make a comeback to the ring, drawing the attention of a documentary camera crew.

James Madio embodies the title character exceptionally. The film provides a humane yet critical perspective on this undersung hero of the sports world—a deeply flawed, incredibly fractured character. Presented by Robert Kolodny at La Biennale di Venezia, the film captivated the audience with its docufiction style, featuring a realism and texture reminiscent of the early films of Scorsese.
