Fremont

Donya, an Afghan refugee residing in the US, spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory. Battling insomnia and haunted by her past, she turns to therapy—the sole space where the audience gains insights into her life through the therapist’s probing questions. One day, she dares to send a special message on a fortune cookie slip as a means to break free from her solitary everyday existence.

In his fourth film, filmmaker Babak Jalali has selected newcomer Anaita Wali Zada as his lead actress. With great magnetism, the actress demonstrates her skills and years of experience as a journalist in Afghanistan. The use of black and white cinematography, coupled with static shots and minimalist music, creates a uniformity that weighs down the characters in their reality, establishing an atmosphere of conformity with the present they inhabit. Fremont received nominations at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and Sundance Film Festival.
