Between the Temples is a heartfelt dramedy written and directed by Nathan Silver, acclaimed for his 2014 film Uncertain Terms, which was showcased at the Americana Film Fest and with photo by Sean Price Williams (guest of honour in 2024). This latest feature follows Ben, a fortysomething synagogue cantor grappling with a personal crisis that has left him without his voice. Just as he struggles to regain his footing, his grade school music teacher reappears as his Bat Mitzvah student. Their relationship evolves through a series of surprising and moving moments.
Infused with humor, warmth, and a touch of melancholy, Between the Tem-ples thoughtfully delves into themes of faith, love, loss, and solitude. While the characters are flawed, their stories offer moments of both laughter and introspection. Anchored by stellar performances from Jason Schwartzman (a Wes Anderson regular) and the remarkable Carol Kane (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), the film has garnered praise at Sundance, SXSW and the Berlinale and now screens at the Americana Film Fest and the nomination at Independent Spirit Awards.
