Under the Lights, an adaptation of the 2020 short film of the same title, follows Sam, a teenager living a tightly controlled life. His epilepsy has always kept him at a distance from everything. Frustrated by constantly being left on the sidelines, he decides to attend prom, a party that is sure to push him to his limits. Nick Offerman (Hearts Beat Loud), Lake Bell (In a World…), Randall Park (Shortcomings), and Mark Duplass (Creep) round out a strong supporting cast.
Miles Levin, the film’s director, who has been diagnosed with epilepsy himself, brings his condition to the screen. Drawing on his own experience, he uses every means at his disposal to explore it with rawness and touches of humor, without falling into melodrama or victimization. The film ultimately suggests that risk-taking is often necessary, and that autonomy, identity, and empathy are inseparable.
