Harry (Jared Leto) and his girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) plot small scams with drugs at the same time they use them. They want to earn enough money to start their own business, live in peace and love each other. Harry’s mom (Ellen Burstyn) leads a boring life, and her only motivation is to participate on a TV show. But she feels fat, and she complements her addiction to TV with an addiction to meds. The excessive drug abuse from all of them will take them on a brutal descent into hell.
A few years after surprising everyone with the unclassifiable Pi, Darren Aronofsky directed this spiral of self-destruction. Requiem for a Dream depicts the addictions of the main characters in an extreme and subjective perspective as if we, the audience, were the ones taking drugs. The film takes the spectator to the edge, combining a sense of fascination and rejection which is hard to explain. An extreme experience; a unique director.
