National Anthem

Lil Nas X showed the world in 2020 that the rural aesthetic could also be queer when he appeared at the Grammys in a bright-pink cowboy suit. By reimagining a quintessential American icon, he highlighted the LGBTQ+ community’s ability to claim a space in the traditionally conservative landscape of the countryside.

Luke Gilford, who grew up immersed in the heartland’s rodeo culture, first documented the world of the American Queer Rodeo with a stunning photo essay in 2022. Now, he transitions to film with a visually rich and emotionally charged exploration of rebel identities, offering a heartfelt tribute to the importance of chosen families.

Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) delivers a transformative performance in this visually arresting story of self-discovery. The film celebrates the beauty of difference and the immense value of a community thriving in a once-hostile environment. A striking debut that resonates deeply.
