Mass is actor Fran Kanz’s debut feature, a drama for which he also wrote the screenplay. His film is both surprising and heart-wrenching, and won numerous awards from various film critics associations, including an Independent Spirit Award and a Youth Jury Award at San Sebastian.
The story takes place almost entirely within the four walls of a church, where we witness the meeting between two married couples. The four of them have in common a tragic event from the past that ruined their lives. With the ghost of the confrontation lurking close-by, they meet in the hope of finding a glimmer of compassion and understanding what happened. With sublime performances by its leading quartet, the characters take us along their heartbreaking catharsis, in search of the forgiveness that would set them free.
