Dìdi

It’s the summer of 2008, and Chris Wang is a 13-year-old Taiwanese American teenager living in Fremont, California. His family life is complex: he lives with his mother, a frustrated painter; his intense paternal grandmother; and his older sister, with whom he has a strained relationship. As he navigates adolescence, Chris faces challenges related to his cultural identity, racism, and the need for personal validation, particularly as social media begins to emerge while discovering first love and skateboarding.

Dìdi is a heartfelt coming-of-age film that won the Audience Award at Sundance and ear-ned four Independent Spirit Award nominations. Sean Wang’s debut feature resonates with audiences through its candid honesty and strong performances by Joan Chen (Twin Peaks) and the rest of the cast, portraying characters who are both vulnerable and resilient in their fight for dignity.
