Bang Bang revisits the archetype of the retired pugilist seen in classics like Raging Bull (1980) and Creed (2015), this time through the lens of Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski—long past his prime and now living in solitude. His routine is upended when his daughter entrusts him with caring for his grandson, a relationship that rekindles his connection to boxing as a trainer and forces him to confront long-buried wounds from his past.
Director Vincent Grashaw places the film’s emotional weight on its lead, masterfully portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. Known for standout performances in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), Nelson brings depth and authenticity to the character. Bang Bang delivers a gritty, unvarnished portrayal of shattered dreams and personal struggles, but at its core, it presents a deeply complex character for whom boxing is a fundamental way of being.
