All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

Winner of the Golden Lion at the latest edition of the Venice International Film Festival, this documentary shows, through photographer Nan Goldin’s story and addiction, how the Sackler family commercialized a drug that caused dependency and ultimately, led to the death of hundreds of thousands of people in the US. Since then, Goldin dedicated her life to fighting this almighty pharmaceutical company and protesting against the museums they sponsored.

Making a film that is halfway between a denunciation movie and a token of her artistic admiration for Goldin’s work (acting as a producer and cinematographer on the film), Laura Poitras – who won the Oscar for Best documentary feature for Citizenfour – is once again nominated for this extraordinary feature, shocking and emotional, a monument to the recent memory of a society and its ability to fight the power elite.
