On Christmas Eve, Sin-Dee Rella, a transgender sex worker – freshly out of prison after a short stay – meets with her friend, Alexandra, fellow working girl on the L.A. streets and partner in crime. Alexandra reveals that Sin-Dee’s boyfriend has been cheating on her with another prostitute, who – on top of all – is not transgender. Mad with jealousy, Sin-Dee goes on a rampage to find this girl to get revenge. Everyday conversations and rants from both protagonists, as well as secondary characters gravitating around them, lead to hilarious moments intertwined with the inherent drama of their lives. Add to this the city of Los Angeles, miles away from its usual glamour, and the intimacy coming from filming with an iPhone 5s. A movie with a true indie spirit that can’t help but remind us of the early work of director Gregg Araki.
Filmmaker Sean Baker is in the limelight of the American independent film industry, although he is yet to be discovered by the general public outside of his home country. His fifth feature film, Tangerine, like his previous work, was nominated and won prizes at major film festivals and the Independent Spirit Awards. After his début film, the lesser-known Four Letter Words, Baker went on to making four features, each time more acclaimed and famed, such as Take Out, Prince of Broadway, Starlet and Tangerine. Screened at the last edition of Sundance and after travelling to various festivals around the world such as Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, London, Mar del Plata or Karlovy Vary, Tangerine now lands in Barcelona. Not to be missed.
