Warren Jeffs is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), an evangelical and polygamous sect that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. Its members lived secretively in communities and according to their own laws. Things changed when Jeffs, heir of the FLDS Church leader, was charged with child abuse. The investigation that followed exposed the darkest secrets of this immense organisation, anchored in paranoia, personal interests, idolatry, lies and fear.
Prophet’s Prey is Amy Berg’s latest documentary. The director had already depicted the dark side of the North American Catholic Church in Deliver us from evil, nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars in 2007. This time, she portrays a wealthy and lesser-known Southwestern America in this gripping documentary uncovering an inconceivable world. Secret recordings of an unwilling Warren Jeffs reveal the darkest deeds of his organisation. A great addition to this already unnerving documentary is Nick Cave’s contribution to narration and soundtrack.
