A surrealist comedy brimming with absurd humor, Problemista marks the debut feature film of Salvadoran comedian and writer Julio Torres, a former Saturday Night Live writer. The story follows Alejandro, an immigrant in New York City with dreams of becoming a toy designer. As his work visa nears expiration, he places his hopes on an eccentric art gallery owner, played by Tilda Swinton, who promises her help in exchange for his assistance with an extravagant exhibition.
The film’s social criticism is so grounded and insightful that it seamlessly integrates absurd, ironic, and surrealist elements, yet still manages to move the viewers.
